karkadeh x lena gray
This project is borne of small moments of embodied care:
A photo from Sudan, of a field of crops and a hope for rain.
A friend placing a mermaid statue on their altar, willing water towards my family.
The slow act of preparing a traditional Sudanese hibiscus tea (karkadeh), the transformation from flower to flow.
By supporting / wearing / talking about this design, you become part of a rhizomic remembering that celebrates & communicates the humanity of Sudanese people, including my beloved ones there – the richness of their land, cultures, creativity, their imaginations, their wholeness.
about the fundraiser
Since the war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, I've been exploring ways to bring other people into a support system for my family in Sudan who, alongside more than 12 million other people, were displaced and are now re-seeding their lives. Karkadeh is my long-term fundraising project of collaboration with artists and poets.
The intention is that Karkadeh feels like the memories I hold of my Haboba, my Sudanese grandmother: robust, full of care, and dreamy. So the project can be sustainable, proceeds are split in the following way: 60% to my family and their community in Sudan, 20% to the artist, 20% towards project facilitation.
This project will run throughout 2026 so keep an eye out for new designs!
Thanks for being part of it. Big love, Dia.
